Mary Pierce: Pancreatic Cancer Warrior
Written By: Mary Pierce, March 2022Dr. Douglas B. Evans of The Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedert Hospital Was Considered Mary’s Miracle
My home is in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
In March 2009, when I was 64 years old, I underwent an operation in Albuquerque after weeks of gastrojejunostomy that revealed a pancreatic tumor that was inoperable. I was treated with chemor/adiation at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces.
Dr. Doug Evans was my miracle
Through a Wisconsin friend’s suggestion, an appointment was scheduled at Froedtert Hospital on June 30, 2009 to consult with Dr. Douglas B. Evans. He became my primary oncologist and liaison for the next six months which eventually led to my surgery on December 18, 2009.
I am often told that I am a miracle because I’m enjoying a healthy, active life. My response is always that Dr. Doug Evans was my miracle. Finding a gifted surgeon, medical staff and having a positive attitude all that year, made it possible for me to still be positive twelve years later.
