Mark Kinsley: Marketer Devoted To Seena Magowitz Foundation

Mark Kinsley is a sleep geek. He may not strike you that way when you first meet him but listen to his Sleep-Geek Podcast and you’ll realize he is. He and his podcast partner Mark Quinn—together affectionately known as “Dos Marcos”—talk up the mattress industry with insight, knowledge, humor and plenty of surprises in their “Sleep Geek” audio show. When you hear how natural and appealing these major supporters of pancreatic cancer research sound navigating their way through industry events, topics related to sleep and bedding and culturally intriguing subjects, you’ll understand why their podcast has a following beyond the mattress business.

Kinsley hasn’t always worked in the sleep sector. He started out as a journalist in TV and radio, anchoring the weekend news at KODE-TV in Joplin, Missouri and hosting a radio talk show in the same market. He spent seven years in broadcasting before going to work for advertising agencies in Joplin and the Greater St. Louis area. One of his clients was Leggett & Platt, the 135-year-old, Carthage, Missouri-based diversified manufacturer of primarily steel-based materials for bedding, furniture and automotive products. In January 2014, he went to work full-time for the company. Today, he’s Vice President of Marketing with Leggett & Platt Incorporated.

A Growing Commitment To Pursuing A Cure if A Deadly Disease

In 2012, he accompanied Leggett & Platt executive Karl Glassman and Karl’s wife Cathi to a golf fundraiser in Phoenix for the Seena Magowitz Foundation. “I was impressed with the level of commitment to the cause of finding a cure for pancreatic cancer,” he said. “As a way to meet people, I participated in the funny golf pants contest, which led to a lot of new friendships. Most importantly, during the event I formed a deeper connection to the effort to fight this terrible disease.” Kinsley’s only personal connection with pancreatic cancer is his cousin’s wife, who passed away in 2015.

The Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser is now its Annual Seena Magowitz Golf Classic. Kinsley’s employer Leggett & Platt is a signature corporate sponsor of the event. Kinsley has been instrumental in years past in producing various creative marketing materials to promote the Annual Golf Classic and other Seena Magowitz Foundation fundraising events.

Because Mark Quinn will be the Honorary Chair for the 2018 Golf Classic in Boston, Kinsley and Quinn are developing all of the creative assets for that event, including the invitations, artwork, marketing and social media campaigns. Kinsley said he will emcee the live auction. In past years, he and Quinn typically assumed that responsibility together, but Kinsley likely will be by himself this year, since Quinn is chairing the 2018 Golf Classic.

Anticipating An Uplifting Experience

Kinsley always looks forward to a “hopeful, fun” event at the Annual Golf Classic. “People who’ve been there before know what an amazing experience it is to be with others so devoted to the cause of finding a cure for pancreatic cancer,” Kinsley said. “For anyone attending who hasn’t before, I promise that it is memorable and inspiring.”

He said attendees at the event experience “a range of emotions packed into a single weekend. If you’re in the mattress industry, you can expect to come away with stronger connections to your peers in the industry. Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend.”
